Stormwater is water from rain or melting snow that doesn’t soak into the ground but runs off into waterways. It flows from rooftops, over paved areas and bare soil, and through sloped lawns while picking up a variety of materials on its way. The quality of runoff is affected by a variety of factors and depends on the season, local meteorology, geography and upon activities which lie in the path of the flow. As it flows, stormwater runoff collects and transports pollutants to surface waters.

Although the amount of pollutants from a single residential, commercial, industrial or construction site may seem unimportant, the combined concentrations of contaminants threaten our lakes, rivers, wetlands and other water bodies. Pollution conveyed by stormwater degrades the quality of drinking water, damages fisheries and habitat of plants and animals that depend on clean water for survival. Pollutants carried by stormwater can also affect recreational uses of water bodies by making them unsafe for wading, swimming, boating and fishing.

Significant improvements have been achieved in controlling pollutants that are discharged from sewage and wastewater treatment plants.

Sprinkler season in NYC parks usually kicks into gear when temperatures hit 80 degrees. In , spraygrounds didn’t get the green light until phase 2 and some of our favorite fountains still aren’t flowing, but we’re keeping them on the list because we’re confident they’ll reopen soon. Why target buildings in the fight to save the planet? Turns out they’re big polluters, at least in dense urban settings. Buildings over 50, feet, including luxury high rises and multi-family buildings, consume almost half of all energy. Benefits of Passive Houses go beyond reducing your carbon footprint.

Benzing Architects. In traditional urban buildings, especially prewar apartments and turn-of-the-century townhomes, air is “filtered” through your walls, which often contain mold and other toxins that you breathe in when air comes inside. A hefty amount of air also escapes through drafty windows and doors and is pulled out of your exhaust units.

That causes your HVAC system to compensate for that loss and your utility costs to rise. In contrast, air flow is completely controlled in a Passive House building via an airtight, high-tech seal aka envelope and higher spec and sound-dampening insulation, windows, and doors. Read: no more lingering cooking odors, according to one Passive House townhouse owner.

Miki Beach Camp will return to Burning Man in , and whether you’re already part of the MikiMau family or are new to our vibe, we’d love your support as we work to spread good times and good music, on and off the playa! But through this eclectic community runs one intense bond: Love of House Music. If Miki Mau was a baby, then it was conceived in Ibiza A casual group of friends gathered to revel in some of the best house music in the world, and within a few days, the once loosely-knit group found themselves transformed into a tight family — one that continued to dance its way through Winter Music Conference, Burning Man, and countless parties.

With each new adventure — combined with the inspiration to explore, create, and share new beats with one another — the group grew larger. Soon sets were being composed on weekends; speakers and turntables were purchased; and DJ nicknames began to emerge Alas, MikiMau was born. As the group gained momentum in their musical efforts, they adopted this label as “MikiMau” — giving it a Cuban spin to pay homage to the background of a few founding members.

And to always have fun!
